ABOUT MY MAPS
  back to previous page

Make Them - Share Them - Save Them - They're Free !!!  The MapServer "My Maps" feature lets you mark and label locations on maps, charts or aerial photos.   Personalize any of our 65,000 topographic maps, nautical and aeronautical charts, aerial photographs and satellite images  across the United States. Then save them in your personal "My Maps List" and share them with your friends and fellow workers.

The "My Maps Wizard" guides you step-by-step.  In the example below, we'll show you how easy it is to make, save and share a hiking map.

1.  Start the MapServer:  type a town, city or place name, select a state, then press the red GO! button.  For example, we chose Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine as the location of our hike.

2.  Select from over 65,000 maps, charts and photographs which cover that location.  This will be the "background" for My Map.  Use the MapServer's pan, zoom, and scale controls to move around on the background map and display a larger or smaller area.

3.  Start the Wizard by clicking the button, beneath the map window of the MapServer.  The wizard will take you through the steps that follow.

4.  Click on the point you want to mark.  An arrow appears, marking the location.  To move the arrow, simply click again on the map.

5.  Select from a variety of symbols to mark your location.  Several categories are provided, from basic signs to specialized search and rescue symbols. We chose a Hiker symbol to represent the trailhead.

6.  Next, name the location.  This name will be appear next to the symbol.  We typed the name "Acadia Hike".  This is also the name that will appear in your personalized My Maps list.

7.  If you like, you can make your symbol into a link to any web address (URL).  In this example, we linked the hiking trail to a park website, containing photos and lots of other information.  Clicking the hiker symbol will open this website.

8.  Save your map in a personal My Maps list for future  reference.  The map is saved under the name you assigned to the symbol.  (Our example map is saved under the name "Acadia Hike.")
